BreadBlok: The Gluten-Free Bakery of Our Dreams
The gluten-free diet is no stranger to Angelenos. With more and more restaurants offering gluten-free options, you can imagine how in-demand an actual gluten-free bakery would be. After conquering life as a booth in 3 different farmer’s markets around the city, Breadblock, an entirely gluten-free bakery, has officially landed their first and mortar just last week. And of course, we are already obsessed.
Located on a street hidden away in Santa Monica, Montana Avenue feels like you’ve just stepped onto the Main Street of very high class small town. Housing upscale boutiques, restaurants and local patrons, BreadBlok seems to have found just the right spot to house their gluten free delicious treats. Founded by the Charlier family, a family who has been gluten-free for 3 generations, the inspiration to their recipes is founded on French Provencal influence. Free of gum, soy, and refined sugars, the ingredients are all thoughtfully sourced and organic.
The cafe is all that you would hope it’d be. A light and breezy French bistro playlist scores the experience in this equally light and breezy cafe. (The tables haven’t been set up inside since COVID but we’re hoping for a comeback as LA county continues to lift restrictions1) Wild Blueberry Focaccia, Chestnut, and even a Brioche loaf are available, of course, all gluten-free. In addition to full loaves, donuts and small slices of bread are also available. (The honey and lavender was my choice of loaf and was fully consumed as fast it took to order!) Coffee, breakfast, and lunch are available 7 days a week in this cute, modern and breezy bistro as well.
If you’re not in the Santa Monica area but are dying for some of their gluten-free treats, they still currently have their three additional farmer’s market locations in Atwater Village, Manhattan Beach, and Studio City. Wherever you are in the city, however, a trip to Montana Avenue to check out Breadblok’s new brick and mortar will not disappoint.
